Healthy Eating App Reviews: Fooducate

So, when you finally decide, hey, I’m going to do this healthy thing, I need to start eating right, there comes a problem- what is actually good for you? When looking for the right foods to choose sometimes navigating through the maze of “healthy” foods can be your biggest obstacle. Enter Fooducate! The app was put together by dieticians and concerned parents who wanted to choose the best options for their family. Simply scan the barcode of any product and the item receives a grade, just like in school.

Fooducate gives you a list of things you should know about each item and things to look out for, such as misleading claims or potential allergy issues. If you’re not happy with the grade it received you can click for a list of healthier alternatives. Or if you’re ever in a curious mood, shake for a random product. Warning: this can and will keep you busy for a good 30 minutes.

This app is great for someone who is very health conscious or has allergies. I wouldn’t take the time to evaluate the details of every product I’m going to buy, but it is very helpful if you have certain dietary restrictions and need to be careful about what you’re eating. Another really cool feature is the lists you can make for more convenient grocery shopping; it even allows you to check off each item as you get it. This is a great feature which could making shopping easier.

Although it is a pretty neat app that helps you choose healthier options, it is not as practical of an app as the others. While in the grocery store, I wouldn’t see myself whipping out my phone to scan every single product, that would take hours. It could be handy to prep a few items before hand, and the checklist feature could be easier than having a physical pen and paper. But it could prove time-consuming putting in the necessary research and then having your phone in hand pushing your shopping cart through the store. This app received 3 out of 5 fedoras because it was well designed and worked smoothly, but it wasn’t as useful or addicting as the other apps we reviewed. Fooducate is available on the Android and is 100% free!

Have you used Fooducate? What did you think of the app?

Healthy Eating App Reviews: Lose It!

Here we are two weeks into our fitness app reviews. More than finding great apps, we’re looking for ways that technology will benefit us and help us live healthier. Another plus is we were looking for apps that will connect our experiences to others- we’re all about social media, so you can say we’re pretty social people, and we like our apps the same way. Besides, it is proven that when you have the support of friends you are more likely to achieve your goal, so it’s an all around win-win situation.

We’ve been playing with numerous apps to find out what we like, what don’t we like, and ultimately what will help us lead healthier lives. This week we’re focusing on what we’re consuming. You are what you eat as the cliché goes, and we were surprised to learn what we were actually eating. The three apps that are first up in our fitness app review are Lose It!, Fooducate, and Water Logged.

We’ll kick this off with our favorite and often most addicting: Lose it! This is a great tool that makes you pay attention to what you are actually eating throughout the day. When you first launch the app, you’re asked your age, gender, height, current weight and target weight as well as how many pounds you are hoping to lose per week. From there, you are given a budget of calories you can eat everyday to meet your goal.

Lose It App Daily Budget                           Lose It Daily Log

This is a very robust app with many features, so we’ll highlight some of our favorites, starting with the friend section. It is very similar to Facebook in that there is a news feed where you can see what your friends have been up to, who’s earned badges, and who hasn’t been logging in their meals so you can remind them to stay on track. You can write a status about your journey and comment on friends’ statuses. The best part about this, motivation wise, is as someone put it in the office, “I don’t want my friends to see I’m getting fat” which is as sure a way as any to make sure I don’t go over my allotted calories.

Our next tab is the main use of the app: the log. When you add food, you select which meal you are entering and then can search for what you’ve eaten- there is a bountiful harvest of selections to choose from. It can be a little overwhelming and often you won’t be able to find your particular item if you are eating at a smaller restaurant or brown bagging it, but you will be able to find a comparable item. In order for the app to be truly useful you must record every morsel that enters your lips. Sometimes you’ll have to build your own meal and add ingredient after ingredient, which can be a pain, especially if you’re out eating with friends, since you don’t want to seem rude. There are buttons meant to help the process and make it smoother by keeping previously recorded foods and meals, which is very convenient, especially if you’re fond of eating that same bowl of cereal every morning for breakfast. The most important thing is that you are able to eat whatever you want whenever and calculate how many calories you’re consuming while doing it.

Another awesome way to log what you’re eating is to just scan the barcode. The scanner can pull up pretty much any product from its vast database and if you find something it doesn’t have, you can add in the nutritional information and save it for the next time. This method makes the whole thing much faster and is pretty fun to boot.

A great way to combat those rising calories is to exercise. This app has an extensive list of events from ultimate Frisbee, to gardening, hangliding, and the more simplistic running. Depending on the chosen activity you can choose how long you were engaged as well as the intensity of it. No matter how small the activity- log it. Nearly anything can be considered an exercise and adding that means you have more calories to eat. Yay, that means more food to stuff in your mouth!!

We thought it was a high quality app that provided meany features and made the process of keeping track of what you eat much easier. We especially loved how you didn’t feel like you were on a diet. You had the power to see what you ate. If you wanted to splurge and eat a doughnut then you know for dinner you had to cut back a little. This app received 4 out of 5 fedoras. What would have made it better was if it offered more organic options, such as an organic taco full of veggies versus a taco from Taco Bell. Lose It! is also available on the Android and the best part: it’s free!!

Did you try out this app? What do you think about it?

Health and Fitness App Reviews Introduction

Today I was sitting on my booty watching CNN and I heard one of the reporters say that, “sitting for more than three hours a day can cut two years off a person’s life expectancy.” Well, I’m done for. Hearing this made everyone at the office think about how much time we spend working at our desks and we got motivated. It’s summer and it’s time to pull a James Brown- get up offa that thing and try out some health apps with us! New fitness apps are popping up every day from the useful to the obscure (being chased by a zombie: yep, there’s an app for that.) With these health and fitness app reviews, we’ll help you sort through the many fitness apps out there. We’ll be delving into the wide world of health and wellness by covering apps, products, and services meant to make living well easier to do. Do you have any fitness apps or products you think we should review?

Here’s a preview of what we have coming up:

Running from Zombies App

Zombies, Run!
You are one of the few to survive the zombie apocalypse. You hear groans and rattled breathing as they draw closer and closer. Run! The terror of being chased by a zombie is meant to motivate you to run for you life, and if I may say so, the fear of the living dead is enough to get me off the couch. Put your headphones in and get ready to be caught up in your very own horror movie. In this fitness app review, we found that the app sends you voice recordings and gives you directions that progress the story. Create your own playlist to listen to while the dialogue takes place in between the songs.

As you turn left or dodge right you evade capture and collect supplies that you can use back at home to thicken the plot. You choose if the military or the doctors are more in need of the medicine you collected that day. You decide how fortified you want each building to be. The more you run the deeper you get into the story and uncover the mysteries of the origins of the zombies. The best part about it, though, is that you can use any speed you like. Walk, run, jog, use the treadmill, it still works. Of course, you may get so caught up in the story you’ll find your self full out running away when the zombies approach.

We are SO trying this!

This upcoming week we will be testing out:

Test them with us!
